January Polar Night

The darkest month, when the sun stays below the horizon. The blue light of polar twilight creates a magical atmosphere. This is prime time for northern lights and a wonderful period for stillness and reflection.

Highlights: Northern lights, ski touring, dog sledding, whale watching, sauna under the stars.

Clothing

Full winter layers essential. Thermal base layer, wool mid-layer, windproof outer shell. Warm boots, hat, gloves, and headlamp for walks.

0 hrs — Polar night. Blue twilight around midday.

February Winter

The sun returns in February, painting the snow-covered mountains in pink and orange. Conditions are excellent for skiing and winter activities, with increasing daylight.

Highlights: First sunrise, northern lights, ski touring, snowmobiling.

Clothing

Full winter gear. Sunglasses needed for snow glare as sun returns.

~4–8 hrs, rapidly increasing.

March Winter

Long, bright days with plenty of snow. March is arguably the best month for ski touring — stable snow conditions, good visibility, and beautiful light. Northern lights still visible early in the month.

Highlights: Ski touring, snowmobiling, last northern lights of the season.

Clothing

Winter layers but lighter on sunny days. Good sunscreen and sunglasses essential.

Daylight

~10–14 hrs.

April Spring

Spring arrives. Snow still covers the mountains but days are long and bright. Great skiing conditions continue at higher elevations. Wildlife is active as the season turns.

Highlights: Spring ski touring, long bright days, eagle watching.

Clothing

Transitional layers. Warm in the sun, cold in the shade. Layering is key.

~16–20 hrs. Approaching midnight sun.

May Spring

The midnight sun arrives mid-May. Snow melts in the valleys while the mountains still hold snow for touring. Nature wakes up rapidly — wildflowers, birdsong, and increasingly green landscapes.

Highlights: Midnight sun begins, spring hiking, fishing season opens.

Clothing

Light layers with a warm jacket for evenings. Waterproof shoes for melting trails.

24 hrs from mid-May. Midnight sun.

June Summer

Full midnight sun. Endless daylight, lush green fjord landscape, and vibrant wildflowers. Excellent for hiking, fishing, and kayaking. The warmest weather begins.

July Summer

The warmest month. Midnight sun until late July. Berry picking begins. Perfect for mountain hikes, fjord exploration, and enjoying the long, warm evenings outdoors.

Highlights: Mountain hiking, berry picking, fjord fishing, midnight sun (until late July).

Clothing

Summer clothing with warm layers for evenings. Sturdy hiking shoes. Mosquito repellent.

Daylight

24 hrs until late July, then bright nights.

August Summer

Late summer harvest season. Berries, mushrooms, and herbs are abundant. Nights return but remain light. Excellent hiking weather and the fjord is at its warmest for fishing.

Highlights: Foraging, berry picking, hiking, fjord fishing, harvest season.

Layers — warm days, cooler evenings. Rain gear recommended.

September Autumn

Autumn colours transform the landscape into a palette of reds, oranges, and golds. Northern lights season begins. Crisp air, incredible hiking, and the start of the ruska season.

Highlights: Autumn colours, northern lights begin, hiking, foraging, whale watching may begin.

Clothing

Warm layers, waterproof outer layer. Warm hat and gloves for evenings.

October Autumn

The first snow may arrive on the mountain peaks. Dark evenings are perfect for northern lights. The landscape transitions toward winter. A quiet, atmospheric time to visit.

November Polar Night

Polar night begins. The sun dips below the horizon for the winter. Dramatic blue twilight colours, excellent northern lights viewing, and the deep stillness of the Arctic.
